Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 16, 1915 Subpoenas were issued Monday and served by the sheriff's office in the grand jury investigation of moral conditions in the lodging houses of this city, and this morning a number of landladies and women employees journeyed to Jacksonville to give their testimony. Among those called are recent arrivals, who within the last two weeks have opened lodging houses in the city in second-story floors vacant for the last six months. It is expected that the investigation will take most of the day. Monday afternoon W.R. Coleman, former county clerk, appeared before the grand jury and verbally and in writing requested the grand jury to make an investigation of the $21,000 shortage in the accounts of ex-Sheriff Wilbur Jones, inasfar as rumors growing out of it affected Coleman. The request was made by Coleman in his own behalf. The statutory limitations were waived by Coleman. Judge F.M. Calkins in his opening instructions to the jury warned them against returning an indictment for murder in the first degree, inasmuch as capital punishment had been abolished, and this was the only punishment provided by law, hence a plea of guilty would embarrass the law with a technicality. The warning has a direct bearing upon the case of Loris Martin, the Trail Creek poacher accused of slaying Game Warden A.S. Hubbard last December.   From Klamath Northwestern — Tobogganing at Crater Lake is the rare sport planned for a party of 12 young people of Fort Klamath who left the Wood River valley town Thursday evening, according to J.S. Glover, who came down from Fort Klamath yesterday. When they left town, members of the party also planned to hold a dance in a building at the rim of the scenic wonder, and possibly other sports in addition to tobogganing. The young people expected to return Monday.
