COLLEGE Beavers, Ducks head to the postseason In regionals, OSU to take on Texas, Oregon gets Iowa Comment By Staff, wire reports MailTribune.com By Staff, wire reports Posted May. 26, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Staff, wire reports Posted May. 26, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Oregon State’s quest back to the College World Series will begin in Dallas against one of the most storied programs in college baseball history. After being passed over for one of the 16 regional hosts, the Beavers found out Monday morning they are headed to Big D, where they open regional action against Texas. Oregon, meanwhile, earned a No. 3 seed in the regional at Springfield, Mo., on the strength of two season-ending victories against overall top seed UCLA. Oregon State (38-16-1) is the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3-seeded Longhorns (30-25) at 11:30 a.m. Friday. It will air online at espn3.com . Dallas Baptist (43-13) is the No. 1 seed and opens against No. 4 seed VCU (37-22). It's the 10th time in 11 seasons the Beavers have advanced to the postseason. The winner of the Dallas regional will face the winner in the best-of-3 super regional against the Coral Gables regional winner. Miami is the No. 1 seed there and the No. 5 national seed. Also in the regional are East Carolina (No. 2), Columbia (No. 3) and Florida International (No. 4). But first up for the Beavers is Texas. “They’re a good ballclub and we have a lot of good ballclubs in our regional,” Oregon State freshman KJ Harrison said. “It’s really cool and I’m just excited for it.” Texas reached the regional thanks to winning the Big 12 tournament and earning the conference’s automatic berth. The Longhorns beat Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game on Sunday. Oregon State coach Pat Casey said the NCAA selection committee did the Beavers no favors. “Certainly a tough draw for a team that finished second in the Pac, and just another reflection of the committee’s decision to, when we don’t host, to put us in that type of a regional,” Casey said Monday morning. “We live with what we live with and hopefully we can go back there and play good ball.” The Longhorns may have only gotten in because of the automatic berth, but Casey and the Beavers know they will face a quality team with one of the best coaches ever in Augie Garrido, who has won five national titles during his 47 years as a head coach. “Obviously one of the best programs in the history and one of the best coaches, too, so we have a lot of respect for that program,” said Oregon State junior pitcher Andrew Moore, who was named the Pac-12 pitcher of the week and one of six national players of the week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday. “It’s going to be a great battle.” It’s a matchup many would think would take place in Omaha, not the opening of a regional Casey agreed, then quipped: “That will not happen this year.” The Beavers admitted there was still a bit of disappointment at not being a host school, but they have turned their attention to hitting the road. “Obviously we’re a little disappointed we didn’t get to host but going somewhere new and facing someone new is really exciting,” sophomore Caleb Hamilton said. Added Casey: “We’ve got to go play, got to go play baseball games. No matter where you go you’ve got to take care of your business and not worry about those things.” The Beavers will carry plenty of momentum into the regional. OSU closed the season going 13-3-1. Oregon, fresh off taking two of three at home against Pac-12 champion UCLA, found out it will play Friday against second-seeded Iowa (11 a.m. PT, ESPN3). Host Missouri State will then face Canisius. The Ducks (37-23) won their final five series in Pac-12 play and nine of their last 10 games to fight their way onto the postseason bubble, following a midseason lull. They posted walk-off wins Saturday and Sunday over the Bruins. Coach George Horton's Ducks will make their fourth straight postseason appearance, and their fifth in the last six years. The Ducks have advanced to Super Regionals once since the program's 2009 reboot, in 2012. Iowa (39-16) is in the postseason for the first time since 1990. The Hawkeyes boast the No. 29 RPI in the country while Oregon got in at No. 66 (RPI as of Saturday morning), but Iowa has struggled of late, losing four of its last six. Iowa's starter to open the Big Ten Tournament was junior right-hander Tyler Peyton (6-4, 3.18), who allowed one earned run and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings to help the Hawkeyes beat Ohio State. Peyton struck out seven and walked none in the start. For the season, Iowa has hit .273, led by Peyton's .352 average in double duty at first base. Like the Ducks, the Hawkeyes don't rely on power bats, having hit just 14 home runs in 55 games. Missouri State (45-10) was selected to host a regional for the first time in the program's 33 years. The Bears won their third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference title this season. Canisius (34-28) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this spring.
