Rescuers rushed Elizabeth Sinclair from her Rogue River Highway home to Three Rivers Hospital but couldn't save her. David K. Case, 17, of Grants Pass was arrested on murder charges. He was lodged in the Jackson County detention center without bail. It's a tragic event, said Josephine County Sheriff Dan Calvert said. We're all devastated. Case was also baby-sitting the girl's 7-year-old brother, who deputies said was not injured. Authorities would not release the name of the brother or of the girl's parents. Authorities scheduled an autopsy on the girl to search for other signs of abuse. Deputies spent Saturday interviewing friends and neighbors. Case was no stranger to the girl or her family. Deputies believe the families have known each other for at least a year. It was a trusted baby-sitter of the family, Calvert said. That left deputies trying to piece together what led to the attack. Case called 911 just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday and asked for police and medics to come to the mobile home in the 3300 block of Rogue River Highway. He called and said he had just murdered someone, said Sgt. Ron Goodpasture. There are no real answers yet as to the why of it. There will likely be a custody hearing soon to determine whether Case, who lives at 1260 Annabelle Lane in Grants Pass, will be tried as an adult under Measure 11. Even if he is tried as an adult, Case could not get the death penalty because he is under 18. He could, however, face life in prison. The homicide was the fourth in Josephine County in less than three months. It is the second of those four in which a teenage boy was arrested on murder charges; 14-year-old Trevor Walraven and his 18-year-old stepbrother Joshua Cain are awaiting trial on charges stemming from the murder of 65-year-old Bill Hull in late July. Elizabeth Sinclair's murder resembles the death of 9-year-old Justin Lang Barlow in Brookings on July 25. In that case, Michael E. George, 17, was charged with aggravated murder for allegedly stabbing the boy, whom he was baby-sitting. George is awaiting trial. Goodpasture said the girl's death is sure to shake residents. It's a tragedy, he said. It's going to shock the conscience of the community. At this point, it's time to pick up the piece and learn from it. It'll cause people to consider who they have for baby-sitters.''
