Lynn Bishop, 65, headed out from his North Valley home around 9:30 a.m. Friday to go  mushroom  hunting. He was expected back home around 6 p.m. that day, but when he didn't return, his family and friends went out looking for him, according to a news release issued by the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. They located his car, but Bishop was nowhere to be found, and after a few hours they called the Sheriff's Office for help. The Josephine County search-and-rescue team was called in, and because Bishop had medical conditions and the weather was dangerous, a helicopter with heat-sensing equipment was requested through the state — but weather conditions were so poor that the craft was not allowed to fly. The search focused on an area near Stratton Creek Road, about a mile up from Galice Road, where the terrain is steep and treacherous. Searchers had trouble making themselves heard when calling Bishop's name because the rain was falling so hard, according to the Sheriff's Office. They found Bishop around 4 a.m. about half a mile from where his car was parked. He said that when he realized he was lost, he stopped, built a fire and waited there for either daylight or rescuers — which the Sheriff's Office called the "exact correct action." Bishop was cold and wet, but was otherwise OK, and was able to walk back to his car with the searchers. He then returned home. The Sheriff's Office is reminding those going out into the wilderness to let their loved ones know where they will be and when they expect to be back, noting that the sooner someone is reported missing, the more likely it is that the person will be found.
