Pelicans hold off South Medford SOC girls basketball KLAMATH FALLS -- South Medford's late rally came up short against Klamath Union in Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball Friday. The Panthers, who trailed by 15 points at halftime, cut the margin to two twice late in the fourth quarter but eventually lost 53-48 at the Pelican gym. "They seemed to come out flat," Klamath Union coach Jack Sharp said. "We didn't seem to do anything special except shoot the ball really well. They had some good open looks but couldn't buy a basket." South senior post Lynn Wooton led the second-half charge with 12 of her game-high 16 points. "Certainly Lynn Wooton stepped up in the second half," said Sharp. "She continually hit some big baskets. She was definitely the person we were worried about. We knew she could get a hot hand and put up numbers quick." Klamath Union (7-6, 2-2 SOC) held a comfortable 47-40 lead when Whitney Grant sank a basket for South (6-6, 2-2). Then Grant made a steal and converted on the other end to slice the margin to three in a 10-second span. Karla Zenz's bucket with about 1:45 remaining cut the Pelicans' lead to 48-46. South had a chance to tie, but Grant missed a field goal attempt and Kate Richards scored on an offensive rebound at the other end. Kellie Thomas' driving layup got South to within two points again, but Sam Gilbert's two free throws upped the Pels lead to four and the Panthers never scored again. ROSEBURG 49, EAGLE POINT 45 -- At Eagle Point, a clutch 3-pointer by Roseburg's Erin Goodell tied the game with eight seconds remaining in regulation to force an overtime, in which the Indians outscored the Eagles 9-5 for a win in Southern Oregon Conference play. Jessica Fisiikava led the Indians with 14 points, and Goodell added eight. Senior Dusty Damon led the Eagles with 21 points, while Stephanie Lucas scored 16.
