As toddlers clutching toys teetered by with their parents, adults in 1800s dress manned craft tables and led tours of the 19th century buildings. Beneath a covered outdoor kitchen, children ground wheat into flour in an oven-side exhibit volunteers said was designed to show kids the basic cooking skills early settlers relied on. Flour ground in a vintage hand mill was turned into dough, rolled out and fired in a wood oven. Even the butter for the rolls was churned on site. "We sprinkle cinnamon on the rolls," a volunteer said. "They're fantastic." The Southern Oregon Historical Society has had an annual Children's Heritage Fair for years, said education director Emma Abby, but didn't start holding them on the farm until 2011. "In this form, this its fourth year," she said. The farm was donated to the historical society in 1982 by Mary Hanley, the last member of the eponymous family that had owned the property since the late 1800s. The society has painstakingly maintained the original buildings on the property, which range from one of the oldest barns in Oregon to a windmill from the early 1900s. While the Children's Heritage Fair is held only once a year, Abby said the historical society uses the farm for outreach and education activities year-round. "We've actually just finished four days of fourth-grade classes," she said. The farm also has several garden plots that Abby said provide vegetables for summer camps' farm-to-table dinners, as well as for local schools through the Rogue Valley Farm to School program. As an old-time band played on the grass, dozens of children scrambled around the lawn with period wooden toys provided by the historical society. Pulling his daughters in a miniature covered wagon, while other kids precariously balanced on wooden stilts nearby, Gold Hill parent Justin Edwards described the heritage fair as a relaxing break for the family. "This is our first year at this one but we've always gone to the ones (at the historical society) in Jacksonville," he said. Abby said that she didn't have attendance numbers for this year's event, but said it appeared to be the biggest turnout the heritage fair had experienced in recent years, requiring all hands on deck.
