Solstice lovers revive Chautauqua Photo by Bob Pennell ASHLAND � Hundreds of counter-culture music lovers gathered at the Well Springs Healing Center Tuesday and Wednesday to honor the solstice and participate in a progressive revival of the old Chautauqua movement. Many of the campers were following the tour of Phil Lesh and Bob Dylan, who performed Tuesday night at the Jackson County Expo. Well Springs (formerly Jackson Hot Springs) owner Gerry Lehrburger said he was glad to provide a place for people to camp rather than having drunk and drugged drivers on the road. Philip Lindsey, with the Alliance for Healthy Communities, organized the event as a benefit for his non-profit group and to support an effort to launch a new Chautauqua event in the fall. "It�s about bringing inspiration and education to different communities through arts, speakers and exhibits that showcase health and sustainable community practices," said Lindsey. The Chautauqua movement at the turn of the century brought entertainment and educational speakers to cities across the nation. Lindsey said Wednesday�s event was a taste of what he�d like to do on a larger scale. He said the bands and speakers during the solstice celebration � Freedom Tribe, Alice Di Micele and Sasha Butterfly � were chosen because of their inspirational qualities. "We want to invite people to come to health � personal, community,�� said Lindsey. "Let�s create healthy places for our kids to grow up in."
