The 5K is an out-and-back with gradual inclines and declines, while the 10K begins like the 5K and continues on to a challenging, hilly course. Rogue River Preserve work party Saturday, Oct. 7: Help Southern Oregon Land Conservancy care for this property along the Rogue River by pulling invasive Scotch broom with weed wrenches and removing old fencing that is a hazard to wildlife. SOLC will provide snacks, tools and gloves. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring your favorite gloves, fence tools and wire cutters if you have some. To register, go to www.landconserve.org. Birding trip to Howard Prairie Sunday, Oct. 8: Southern Oregon Land Conservancy will lead a free birding trip from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to a privately protected property and nearby federal lands on Howard Prairie with two excellent birders and naturalists, Bob Hunter and Frank Lospalluto. Bear Creek salmon walk Friday, Oct. 12: Every autumn, migrating chinook salmon make their way up the Rogue River to spawning grounds in tributaries throughout the Rogue and Illinois valleys. KS Wild will lead an easy walk starting at Lynn Newbry Park in Talent from 10 a.m. to noon to see spawning salmon in Bear Creek and learn about their habitat and behavior. Space is limited. Hike & Learn - Great Gray Owls in CSNM Friday-Saturday, Oct. 12-13: The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument contains one of the largest known populations of great gray owls in the United States. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, at Ashland Outdoor Store, birding expert Harry Fuller will discuss great gray owls, which breed inside the monument. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, he will lead a hike to Soda Mountain and Little Hyatt Reservoir looking for great gray owl habitat. The hike will cover about 4 miles on an easy trail. Ashland Mushroom Fair Saturday, Oct. 13: The annual event at Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland, includes local mushroom experts, enthusiasts and connoisseurs, with craft booths, food, demos and local organizations in the Nature Shop alley between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. For details, call 541-482-3241. Rogue River Preserve ‘Walkabout for Families’ Saturday, Oct. 14: Bring your little ones and let them discover the wonders of nature. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a guided activity, lunch by the river, some walking and lots of exploring. Organized by Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, the outing is recommended for children 3 and older. Folks should bring their own picnic lunch. Leaders are naturalists Mike Potts and Della Merrill. Rogue River Preserve fish tour Sunday, Oct. 15: Walk the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy’s Rogue River Preserve north of Eagle Point with a fisheries ecologist and look for spawning chinook salmon in the Rogue River from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Learn about stream and salmon ecology while enjoying the beauty of this recently conserved property. Post-fire community restoration on Bear Creek Thursday, Oct. 18: Join Karlia Ver Eecke, education and outreach coordinator for the Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District, at 7 p.m. as she discusses post-fire restoration on Bear Creek at a free community program coordinated by Siskiyou Chapter Native Plant Society of Oregon. JSCWD is leading the post-fire community restoration project of the Peninger fire area in Central Point. The fire burned 123 acres July 17, including 35 acres of riparian zone along the Bear Creek Greenway. The area will be restored to meet ecological and public safety goals. Refreshments at 6:45 p.m. Location is Southern Oregon University Science Building, Room 161, Ashland. Free and open to the public. White Oak Farm and Forest Tour Saturday, Oct. 21: Nestled into a northern fold of the Siskiyou Mountains, White Oak Farm is a small, nonprofit, farm-based education center. Tour the conserved farm and forest from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with co-owner Taylor Starr and forest ecologist Tom Atzet to learn about the farm’s sustainable land-use practices, community programs and restoration efforts. Then take a stroll through the forested hill above the farm with Atzet and learn about the ecology and wildlife. Bring a bag lunch. Organized by Southern Oregon Land Conservancy. Applegate River salmon walk Saturday, Oct. 27: Join KS Wild staffer Allee Gustafson on a leisurely stroll from 10 a.m. to noon to look for spawning salmon while learning about their habitat and behavior. Illinois River salmon walk Sunday, Nov. 4: KS Wild will lead an easy walk from 1 to 3 p.m. to learn about the salmon lifecycle and view wild salmon spawning in the Illinois River. Space is limited. Mushrooms at Rogue River Preserve Sunday, Nov. 19: Learn how to search for and identify edible and toxic mushrooms around the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy’s Rogue River Preserve, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Leader is photographer and naturalist Mike Potts. To register, go to www.landconserve.org. Siskiyou Velo Every Saturday: Brisk rides are for strong riders who want to ride in a paceline with occasional sprints and brisk climbs. Speeds are above 20 mph on flats and average of 15 to 18 mph overall. The route and starting point will vary expect some climbing and, in fact, on most days, a lot. Riders should know how to make repairs. Riders are expected to review online and understand the planned route. The Brisk group is not a no-drop group, slower riders are discouraged. For details, call Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804. Every Saturday: Velo Mello meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph on flats with few, if any, pacelines.
