Police called the fatal shooting "an isolated event" and are still tracking down a possible motive. Robert Kahlil Davies-Calhoun, 29, allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the Ford Ranger, killing 53-year-old Douglas Mitchell Spaur at the scene before fleeing on foot, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said. The shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. just outside the front door of the Stop 'N Go Market at 6079 Table Rock Road near Central Point, moments after Spaur walked out of the store, Jackson County Sheriff Corey Falls said. Sheriff's deputies looking for a man matching the shooter's description discovered Davies-Calhoun nearby on Gibbon Road and took him into custody on outstanding misdemeanor warrants. He was found carrying a handgun suspected as being used in the shooting, Falls said Investigators plan to do forensics work on the seized handgun to tell if it was used in today's shooting, Falls said. The murder charge was added after Davies-Calhoun was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained Monday night without bail. Falls said investigators trying to piece together the case and finger a possible motive were looking into each man's background to see if they had any history together. "That's what we're trying to figure out," Falls said. Falls said investigators so far have "no reason" to believe it was gang-related, and he stopped short in a press conference Monday at calling the case a random shooting. "We believe at this time it was an isolated event," Falls said. Deputies at the scene said the killer fired several shots but Falls today declined to specify how many shots investigators believe were fired. A store employee telephoned 911 to report the shooting, and the store was closed as deputies searched the vehicle and interviewed potential witnesses. "We're still talking to as many people as we can," said Falls, adding that investigators would like to talk to anyone who believes they have information relevant to the case. Falls said Spaur lived near the market and Davies-Calhoun had a Central Point residence but he declined to be more specific. Davies-Calhoun's only criminal history in Jackson County was a July 2014 arrest on charges of harassment and interfering with a police report.
