Really? The mayor and City Council just don't get it. For $150,000, we deserve and want candidates, yes, even "outsiders," with city management experience (and women and people of color, even! Oooooh, what a concept!), not more good-old-boy insiders. This process has been an utter epic fail. Cara Davis-Jacobson Medford Anemic GDP growth Jason Furman, the chair of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, admitted that the withering economy is tantamount to five recessions and that 10 percent of prime-aged men, those between 25 and 54, 7 million in total, have quit looking for work. He further admitted that the anemic economic recovery was influenced "by (the administration's) policies and institutions, not technology." After 20-plus quarters of below 2 percent growth of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the monetary measure of the market value of all final goods and services produced in a period (quarterly or yearly), we need double that rate for job creation and growth. Despite what the president's Ministry of Truth pumps out, the economy is stagnant, but will continue so under Hillary Clinton. Clinton, counting on both greed and the economic illiteracy of Americans, wants more taxation, more government spending and more regulation. Can we tax ourselves into prosperity? Dom Fontana Medford Why is Walden working so hard? Rep. Greg Walden’s ad says, “Tell Congressman Greg Walden to Continue His Fight to Protect Your Medicare.” He wants to “Stop Harmful Medicare Experiment” by passing HB 5122, which has only a 2 percent chance of enactment, and which provides no alternative and does nothing to limit the increasing cost of Medicare. The “experiment” is with provider payment, not with patient care. Walden also wants you to support his efforts to block implementation of a Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board per HB 1190, which was passed by the House last year ! The Senate has taken no action on it and probably won’t. Why does Walden want your support for a bill that has already passed the House? And, why is he working so hard for two bills that have virtually no chance of being enacted and that block important opportunities to slow the growth of Medicare spending while providing absolutely no alternatives? David Lane Ashland Vote yes on 97 On the first day of school two years ago, I watched 52 juniors try to find seats in my Grants Pass High School classroom. In addition to the 30 in desks, I had 22 more sitting on countertops, desktops and the floor. The next day, 12 students didn’t come, the following day, five more. They weren’t cutting class; they had self-selected out of a class too large for learning. We know that the best learning takes place when teachers and students work together with as much individualized attention as possible. And yet, Oregon currently operates on one of the shortest school years and the third-largest class sizes. Measure 97 can change that by making the largest 1,051 C corporations in Oregon pay their fair share in corporate taxes. I hope you’ll join me in voting yes on Measure 97 because every Oregon student deserves a seat in their own classroom.
