Carl Gene Dunlap, 40, of Medford, was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Medford to the maximum penalty of 10 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On the morning of Jan. 13, 2014, Dunlap was showing a black 9 mm handgun to acquaintance Derreck Cohen in the 4900 block of Table Rock Road in Central Point when the gun accidentally discharged and struck the Cohen in the groin, according to an affidavit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court before charges moved to U.S. District Court. Cohen was rushed to the hospital and survived his injury, but he refused to identify Dunlap. Witnesses came forward, however, including Dunlap's ex-girlfriend, who told sheriff's deputies that Dunlap, also known by the nickname "Scoobie," had come into her trailer with the gun and fired the weapon into her trailer floor earlier that morning. Dunlap was arrested later that day following a chase in which Dunlap jumped from a moving vehicle and attempted to elude the police on foot, according to a Department of Justice press release. Weeks later, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms matched the spent shell casing with a 9 mm handgun recovered from a motel in Medford. Dunlap was convicted of felon in possession of a firearm May 15 in U.S. District Court. Mail Tribune archives and court records show Dunlap has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1995, including felony convictions for third-degree assault, third-degree robbery, coercion, burglary, eluding police in a vehicle, and 12 separate methamphetamine possession convictions. According to the Department of Justice, Dunlap has 17 misdemeanor convictions, including fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest, reckless endangering and attempting to elude on foot.
