Armstrong still alive in mat tourney LAS VEGAS -- One Southern Oregon wrestler remained alive after the first day of the Las Vegas Invitational. The tournament draws top wrestlers from both NCAA and NAIA schools throughout the country. Matt Armstrong won three of four matches Friday in the 165-pound division and needs one more win today to place. Armstrong improved his season record to 8-3, decisioning Marshall Hahn of Northern Colorado, 8-3; losing to top-seed Mark Samples of Edinboro, 13-5; decisioning Jason Wells of Missouri Valley, 15-3; and edging John Kopinsky of Missouri, 3-2. He meets Bill Zeman of Illinois in the consolation quarterfinals. SOU's Ryan Escobar won two of four matches at 125 pounds before bowing out. Escobar topped Fred McCathron of Western State in Colorado, 16-4; lost to Matt Fratta of Ohio State, 6-3; pinned Clint Lloyd of Central Oklahoma in 3:23; and dropped a 9-8 decision to Moses Delfin of Cal State Bakersfield. The Raiders' Jamie Haddon bounced back to win three 197-pound bouts after losing his opener to Kevin Stroh of Missouri, 1-1, in sudden victory. Haddon beat Steve Schofield Northwestern Wyoming, 7-1; topped Rob Todd of Ohio State, 7-1; and decisioned Luis Ojeda of San Francisco State, 6-3. He was pinned by Jason Constant of Central Oklahoma in 1:36. Three Oregon State wrestlers reached the semifinals: Oscar Woods (149), Zane Zajak (197) and heavyweight Matt Orndorff.
