PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP Moore, Newman power Panthers to sweep Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 7:02 PM Updated Apr 11, 2015 at 10:45 PM Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 7:02 PM Updated Apr 11, 2015 at 10:45 PM » Social News South Medford’s Rachael Moore was a one-woman wrecking crew early on for South Medford and fellow senior Hannah Newman picked up where she left off in Game 2 as the Panthers swept Thurston in Southwest Conference softball Saturday. Moore went 3-for-3 with a third-inning home run and four RBIs overall as South Medford topped Thurston 6-0 in the opener. In Game 2, Newman supplied a two-run home run in the first inning to get the Panthers rolling and scored the eventual winning run in a 4-3 decision at South Medford High. Pat Moore tripled and then scored on an RBI single by her sister Rachael in the first inning and, after her solo homer, Rachael Moore tacked on a two-run single in the fourth inning. “Rachael had a heckuva day at the plate,” said Panthers head coach Miranda Gillaspie-Smith, “and I thought the girls played well to bounce back from that setback (to Grants Pass) last week and played great defense today.” Pat Moore struck out 15 and allowed three hits with two walks — one intentional — in Game 1 for the Panthers (10-1, 5-1 SWC). The sophomore left-hander struck out 13 and allowed eight hits with one intentional walk in Game 2. After Newman staked South to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, Pat Moore singled home Hannah Smith in the fourth inning and Alexis Baker followed a Bailee Tatum single with one of her own to plate Newman in the fifth. Smith went 2-for-3 in Game 2 for the Panthers, who next host North Medford (7-2, 6-0) in a key SWC clash on Tuesday. Darian Stedman had a solo homer among her two hits in Game 2 for Thurston (2-6, 1-5). FIRST GAME Thurston;000;000;0;—;0;3;1 South Medford;101;400;x;—;6;5;2 Muggy and Hoechlin; P. Moore and Tatum.
