The fire was reported at 9:16 p.m. in the 6000 block of Dodge Road. Jackson County Fire District No. 3 officials said the man and woman living there smelled smoke and evacuated the building with their two dogs. District 3 spokeswoman Ashley Lara said the first engine to arrive on scene did not see any smoke, but the second engine saw clouds coming from the attic and eaves. Fire destroyed the attic and much of the interior of the 1,200-square-foot structure. Seven engines responded, including two wildland rigs called in case flames spread to nearby vegetation. Crews had the fire under control by about 10:07 p.m. The owners are insured. The cause is still under investigation.
