The annual dipstick reading of local banking deposits also showed commercial bank checking and savings accounts edging closer to the $3 billion mark. As of June 30, the county's 12 banks attracted a little over $2.984 billion in deposits to their 72 offices, up from $2.897 billion a year ago. Umpqua garnered 18.33 percent of market deposits, or $547.06 million, a smidgen more than U.S. Bank's 18.3 percent, or $546.04 million. Thanks to former Sterling Bank accounts, Umpqua added $132.25 million to its deposits. "We've been trying to build a different kind of bank for some time now," said Neal Brown, Umpqua's executive vice president and regional director. "With the integration of Sterling, we have the ability to create a bank with more product services and expertise. There are a lot of good things happening right now and we're seeing businesses starting to reinvest in their business. I think that's a good sign. During the Great Recession, you saw businesses pull in their horns for a little while, waiting to see what was going to happen." Umpqua operates 13 offices — four more than in 2012 —  with 150 employees in the county.   "I don't think you ever sit on top, thinking you are in the best position," Brown said. "You better be at the best of your game, because you know people are coming after you. It goes back to how do we make ourselves the bank of choice." Between 1999 and 2009, Jackson County deposits nearly doubled, to $2.87 billion from $1.52 billion, before the residual effects of the Great Recession slashed the local commercial banking aggregate to $2.74 billion. "We've got nearly the same number of branches and offices in the area as we did then," said Gloria Schell, U.S. Bank's regional president for Southern Oregon and Northern California. "We've seen some consolidation among the different banks. But purely in apples-to-apples comparison, our market is showing strength. The local market continues to get stronger and there are a lot of good things coming our way." Wells Fargo remained No. 3, followed by JPMorgan Chase, AmericanWest and KeyBank.  “This year we’ve earned business from new customers in Jackson County and deepened our relationship with our existing ones," Wells Fargo spokesman Tom Unger said. "We also saw more customers keep more deposits with Wells Fargo." Medford-based People's Bank of Commerce climbed over Bank of America into the No. 7 slot.  "We've seen pretty good growth,"  said Ken Trautman, president and CEO of People’s Bank, whose institution added more than 1 percent of market share from 2013. "Just looking at the 97504 ZIP code, where most of our branches are, we had about 10 percent market growth. Our goal is steady, profitable growth."
