Mail Tribune 100: July 11, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News July 11, 1916 BULLIS RETURNS, SAYS TOWNE MAY PURCHASE BONDS At the coming of the train from the north this morning, a line of cars with horns shrieking drew up before the Commercial club and the occupants, forming a half-circle around the door of the club, gave an ovation to S. S. Bullis, who had returned on the train from New York. Called upon for a few remarks, Mr. Bullis expressed his deep sense of gratitude and responsibility toward the people of Medford. Concerning his conference with the Towne interests in New York, Mr. Bullis said: "I found the attitude of Towne and his people very encouraging. I have not the slightest doubt but that they will operate, and as to the faith of Mr. Towne in the project, he personally assured me that he thought he would be able to handle the bonds of the city himself. "As to the carrying out of the contract," continued Mr. Bullis, "it is going to take a great deal of time and careful planning to get everything under way. We will proceed step by step, in direct harmony with the thoughts and plans of the people of Medford with the details of putting this project through." "We must now get the business to warrant the laying of a line of rails to the Blue Ledge district. It has been my experience that such a line as we are about to start receives more support from the lumber industry than from mining. I shall eagerly await development of this branch of industry. "I certainly appreciate the attitude of the people of Medford," he concluded. "I have a deep sense of responsibility toward you and the plans that have been fostered. I hope that it will lie in my power to successfully carry them to completion." EAGLE POINT EAGLETS Oliver Adams and E. A. Hildreth were passengers on the same train for their homes in Butte Falls, and Ralph Stanley and Miss Miller of Lake creek were on the same train on their way home.
