But the junior left-hander walked 10 and second-ranked Jesuit capitalized on the free passes to post a 5-0 victory. Jesuit sophomore hurler Olivia Strickland outdueled the Panther ace by tossing a no-hitter and recorded 16 strikeouts. “(Strickland) was in command,” said South Medford coach Miranda Gillaspie-Smith, “and we didn’t make the adjustments at the plate.” The Crusaders (27-2) scored the only run Strickland would need in the second inning when Moore walked the bases loaded and then was called for illegal pitch, which brought home the run. Jesuit catcher Emily Preble provided an insurance run in the fifth inning with a solo home run. The Crusaders extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Moore issued four straight walks, followed by a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring error. Moore (20-8) struck out 10. “They were disciplined at the plate,” said Gillaspie-Smith. “We knew we had to compete on both sides of the field.” Jesuit will host Reynolds, a 2-1 winner over Roseburg, in Friday’s quarterfinals. GRANTS PASS 4, WESTVIEW 3: At Portland, Grants Pass secured an upset of top-seeded Westview when Valeti Fifita was called out at home after a relay from left fielder Halleigh Noga to catcher Brielle Doman in the bottom of the seventh inning denied what would have been the tying run in the 6A state playoff game. Grants Pass (17-11), the No. 17 seed, scored three runs in the fifth inning when Brooklyn Hurd hit a grounder through the shortstop's legs with the bases loaded. Skylar Padgett, who also earned the complete-game pitching victory, hit a solo home run off Abby Greer in the fourth. The Cavers will play at No. 9 Franklin in Friday’s quarterfinals. PUTNAM 5, EAGLE POINT 1: At Milwaukie, defending Class 5A champion Putnam triumphed in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Shae Grady had two hits and Megan Ayres pitched a four-hitter with five walks and four strikeouts for 13th-seeded Eagle Point (14-13). Fourth-seeded Putnam improved to 25-2. PENDLETON 17, CRATER 0, 5 inn.: At Pendleton, Crater drew Pendleton and its first-team all-state sophomore pitcher Lauren Richards, who tossed a perfect game in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. The Comets finished the season 14-15 after taking fourth place in the Midwestern League. Richards tossed six strikeouts and was backed by three home runs. Baylee Plankenhorn was walked to leadoff the final frame and, after stealing second base, came home on McMahon's hit to secure the Challengers’ first state playoff win since 1995. Shaylee Ledesma was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, McMahon 2-for-2 with two runs and Plankenhorn 2-for-4 with three runs for the Challengers (17-4), who travel to face top-seeded Dayton in Friday’s quarterfinals. Elly Moulder got two of the three hits by Rogue River (13-9). Dayton (25-3) will host SCL champion Cascade Christian in Friday’s quarterfinals. Marissa Raines and Chrystyna Smith supplied RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
