Ashland ski area still awaits snow that’ll stick I’ve noticed that many ski areas in the Northwest have already opened, and Mount Bachelor is scheduled to open this Friday. With all this early snow in the mountains, will the Mount Ashland ski area open early, too? — Jim J., Central Point Skiers and snowboarders had visions of Turkey Day turns when all that snow fell at the beginning of November, Jimmy, but after this past weekend the outlook for an early opening on Mount A isn’t quite so rosy. There was about 2 feet of snow at the Mount Ashland lodge last Friday, but by the time the weekend rain ended, there was only about 8 inches on the ground. Advertisement The ski area typically needs about 3 feet of snow at the lodge to open, so, in the words of marketing director Rick Saul, Mount Ashland will need "substantial snow for a November opening." On average, Mount Ashland opens around Dec. 10, but there have been November openings as recently as 2002 (Nov. 30) and 1999 (Nov. 25). In the best of all possible worlds ("snow willing" as they say), Mount Ashland would open on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If the pack is deep enough, the chairs will run through the long holiday weekend (Wednesday through Sunday) and then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next two weeks (Dec. 2-4 and Dec. 9-11). Seven-day-a-week skiing would begin on Friday, Dec. 16. Of course, everything depends on how cold and wet things get over the next two weeks.
