Kooken went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to help the Southern Oregon RiverDogs take the first game of an amateur baseball doubleheader with the Redding Dodgers on Saturday at Miles Field. The RiverDogs (3-0) pounded out 19 hits during the 11-4 win in the opener then scored a 9-3 victory to complete the sweep. Kooken’s two-run triple highlighted a four-run second inning that helped break open the game. Steve DeClerck also had three hits and Bill Rowe went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Advertisement John Jefferson gave up two runs and struck out six in five innings to pick up the win. Rowe belted a solo home run — his first of the season — during a two-run fifth in the nightcap. Ryan Garrett went 3-for-3 with a pair RBIs and Matt Skundrick added two hits. Chris Empio gave up four hits and fanned 10 for a complete game victory. American Legion MEDFORD MUSTANGS 14-6, TEHAMA BULLS 3-4 — At Red Bluff, Tyler Engle belted a grand slam in Game 1 to highlight the Medford Mustangs American Legion doubleheader sweep of the Tehama Bulls. Engle put the Mustangs on the board with his two-out slam in the second inning and Medford added a five-run fourth for insurance in the five-inning rout. The game was shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule. Tyler Heil went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Mustangs (2-0) in the opener, while Matt Smith (two hits, three runs) and Evan McArthur (two hits, two RBIs) also added big offensive performances. Mike Allen went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out four, to record the win and hand Tehama its first loss after a 5-0 start. Richard Goosman fanned six and had a one-hitter through five innings to pick up the win in the nightcap. Allen and Matt Smith each had two hits in the Game 2 victory with Smith driving in a pair of runs.
