UP NEXT: Tuesday, North Medford at Grants Pass; South Eugene at Thurston. » Social News The North Medford girls basketball team turned up the heat in the first quarter and never looked back during a 60-29 win over Thurston on Friday at North Medford High. Black Tornado sophomore wing Maggie Freeman scored 17 points, including 10 in the second quarter, and junior post Savannah Bumgardner added 13 points and six rebounds during the Southwest Conference tilt. North Medford (15-6, 7-4 SWC) raced out to a 20-5 lead in the opening eight minutes. “That was good to see,” North Medford head coach Tim Karrick said. “I thought we came out and set the tone early with our defensive pressure. We had a good start.” Megan Fossen turned in nine points and six rebounds, and Adriane McLemore added six points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Tornado, which led 39-11 at halftime. North outscored the Colts (3-14, 0-11) 19-6 in the second period. Freeman owned 15 points by intermission. “(Freeman) really got us started and played well early,” Karrick said. The Tornado kept up the pressure in the second half to seal the winning deal. “We played a lot of people in the second half and got some experience for girls who work hard in practice,” Karrick said. North outrebounded the Colts, 34-24, and forced 28 turnovers. “Our goal was to control the boards,” Karrick said. “And we turned (Thurston) over and that gave us opportunities in transition.” Ten players scored for the Tornado, which was coming off an 89-52 loss to South Medford on Tuesday. “It was just a team effort,” Karrick said. “Everyone contributed, everyone that played came in and made something positive happen. That was good for us. We didn’t have any lapses at any significant time, which was nice.” North will next play at Grants Pass next Tuesday. The Tornado defeated the Cavers, 47-29, in their first meeting on Jan. 26. “We are growing and we are continuing to improve,” Karrick said. “Our girls are putting in the hard work in practice. We’re just focused on finishing the season strong and getting ready for playoffs.” Kendall Minium led Thurston with 12 points. “They are young and they play hard,” Karrick said of the Colts. “They are a physical team but we held up to their pressure and physical play. We really stepped up. I thought we were more physical and tougher with the ball. We were diving for balls. I liked our toughness and grittiness.” North has three more games to go before the postseason. The Black Tornado is tied with Roseburg (14-7, 7-4) for third place in the SWC. The two squads meet in their league finales on Feb. 23. THURSTON (29): Youngbauer 2, Minium 12, A. Keefauver 0, Regas 2, S. Keefauver 2, B. Gilbert 0, Landrum 0, M. Gilbert 4, Anus 0, Donahoe 7.
