Meunier, 35, submitted his letter of resignation earlier in the week, said Crater Athletic Director John Beck. "It was totally his decision," said Beck. "I think he decided he was at a time in his life that he wanted to go in a different direction." Meunier could not be reached for comment. Meunier, a 1987 Crater graduate, will remain at the school as a guidance counselor and is looking to pursue his administrative credentials, Beck said. Advertisement "He went to school at Crater, came back and taught at Crater and spent his entire teaching and almost all his coaching career at Crater," said Beck. "He was very devoted. "I think he’s done a good job of putting some things into place in the basketball program for future coaches to build on." During his tenure, Meunier compiled a 72-123 overall record and a 36-78 mark in the Southern Oregon Conference. He led the Comets to state-playoff berths in 1998-99 and 2001-02, losing in the first round both times. But Crater went 17-55 over the last three seasons and a year ago tied Eagle Point for last place in the SOC at 1-13. Meunier, who also served as the Comets’ cross country coach for two seasons, still ranks among the top scorers in Crater basketball history. He was the leading scorer for the 1985-86 team that posted a 23-4 record, and he went on to set eight records at Southern Oregon University and later played professional ball in Australia. Beck and his staff have already begun the process of looking for a new coach. "We’ve started putting information out there, and we’re gathering a list of qualified applicants," Beck said. "We want somebody who’s high energy and can take the program forward in a positive direction." The next Comet coach will inherit a young but talented group. Crater loses only four seniors and returns six would-be juniors from a class that went undefeated as freshmen two years ago. Reach reporter Kevin Goff at 776-4483 or e-mail [email protected] .
