Wade Lee Katzenbach, 37, of Phoenix, was arraigned on charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual penetration with a foreign object, second-degree assault, menacing, pointing a firearm at another and contempt of court. The kidnapping, rape, sexual penetration and assault charges all fall under Oregon’s tough-on-crime law, Measure 11. The law mandates minimum sentences for people convicted of certain serious crimes. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies arrested Katzenbach Monday near the intersection of Hamilton and Upper Applegate roads after he had spent two days apparently hiding in the woods, sheriff’s Capt. Joe Puckett said. Puckett said Katzenbach apparently agreed to meet a woman he knows at a pullout on Hamilton Road Saturday morning to discuss a pending civil lawsuit. Katzenbach became angry, assaulted the woman and forced her into his truck at gunpoint, Puckett said. Then Katzenbach drove to the Yale Creek area and allegedly raped the woman before leaving her beside the road, Puckett said. Advertisement Police believe Katzenbach abandoned his truck nearby and fled into the woods with several guns. Officers searched for him until a tip from a motorist steered searchers to him Monday afternoon. The victim was treated and released at Providence Medford Medical Center on Saturday.
