Email Story to a Friend May 24, 2006 Platt signs with Beavers; McCoy to be a Duck By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune EAGLE POINT — Once high school teammates, now college rivals. Eagle Point seniors Chris Platt and Jake McCoy will head their separate ways in the fall after the two announced Tuesday they had signed with rival Pac-10 schools. McCoy will wrestle for the University of Oregon, while Platt heads 40 miles north to compete for Oregon State University. "I’m pretty happy for both those guys," said Eagle Point coach Kacey McNulty. "They both got scholarships and they both deserve it." McCoy chose Oregon over OSU. Advertisement "I like the coaches, the guys there and the program," said McCoy. "Just everything about it was more attractive to me." Platt always wanted to attend Oregon State but was set to compete for North Carolina until a phone call changed his mind last Friday. "I had pretty much decided I was going to North Carolina," said Platt, "until Oregon State called and doubled their offer. That showed me right there I was going to Oregon State. I was pretty excited about it. It’s a pretty big relief." Platt, who plans on majoring in fish and wildlife management, will get approximately 55 percent of his schooling paid for. The Beavers were also in the process of bringing in a new coaching staff. "Oregon State didn’t really offer me much at first," said Platt, who will most likely bump up from 171 pounds to wrestle at 174 next year. "The coaches changed so I didn’t know what was going on." OSU’s new coach, Jim Zalesky, then set up a meeting with Platt to reassure the interest was still there. "They said they still wanted me there," Platt said. "I’ve always wanted to go to Oregon State. "It’s worked out a lot better now financially for my family." McCoy, who will get full tuition and books paid for at Oregon, was relieved the process was finally over. "It’s a pretty big load off my shoulders," he said. While at Eagle Point, both McCoy and Platt shined on the mats. Platt was runner-up at the Class 4A state tournament at 171 following a narrow 3-2 defeat to Colby Covington of Thurston. One month later, however, Platt earned All-American status with a second-place finish at the Senior National High School wrestling championships held in Pittsburgh. McCoy, wrestling at 152, cruised to a 9-1 victory over Tim Patrick of Milwaukie for his first state title. He plans to wrestle at 165 next season for the Ducks. Eagle Point’s Randy Pershall also will continue wrestling at the next level after the 125-pound competitor announced he will compete at Southwest Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.
