Newmann brothers thwart Grizz Eagles remain second in SOC EAGLE POINT -- The Newmann brothers -- senior Mike and junior Nick -- were major contributors to Eagle Point's Southern Oregon Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over Ashland Saturday. The surging Eagles (9-4, 5-1 SOC) posted a pair of shutout victories over the Grizzlies, 2-0 and 5-0, at The Yard. "Our pitchers really stepped it up and made the pitches they had to make to prevent any runs," Eagle Point coach Tom Britton said. "They mixed it up and kept them off balance." In the opener, Nick Newmann pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks. The Eagles bunched together three of their five hits in the fourth inning to account for both runs. Jesse Stevensen, Mike Newmann and Justin Whisenhunt provided the base hits that produced the game's only runs. Stevensen pitched a three hitter with five strikeouts in the second game, but walked eight. Mike Newmann contributed two hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth, and three RBIs. Whisenhunt also added two hits. Newmann is hitting near .500 in SOC play and has four home runs on the season. "I think he might be one of the best hitters in the conference," said Britton. "He's a model of consistency. He's a tough out." FIRST GAME Ashland .............000 000 0 -- 0 3 0 Eagle Point ........000 200 x -- 2 5 3 Allen and McGuire; N. Newmann and Cardoza. W -- N. Newmann. CRATER 7-17, KLAMATH UNION 3-3 -- At Central Point, Brent Foster didn't get the starting call on the mound in the second game for third-ranked Crater (15-0, 6-0 SOC) because of a weakened condition from a 24-hour flu-like illness on Friday, but it didn't adversely effect the talented junior at the plate. In the doubleheader, Foster went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs. His big offensive day included two home runs, a double and triple. In the opener, junior Casey Campbell walked three but struck out 10 in posting his sixth victory without a defeat. Foster smacked a three-run homer in the first inning to get the Comets off to a fast start. Steve Rice sparked Crater's 12-run second inning in game 2. Rice had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple, and four RBIs in the inning. Robbie Williams went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Williams contributed to the second-inning outburst with a two-run single. GRANTS PASS 6-0, ROSEBURG 4-13 -- At Grants Pass, lefthanded pitcher Mike Sammis held Roseburg in check in the opener and received offensive support from Jason Anderson and Cory Restvedt, but Grants Pass (3-9, 2-4 SOC) could not get to Indians pitcher Jed Brewer in the five-inning nightcap. Anderson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game 1. His two-run fifth-inning homer gave Grants Pass a 5-4 lead. Restvedt added two hits and scored twice, while Gabe Barbee added a solo home run in the third inning. Ryan Morrison and Kevin Linderman provided the offensive firepower to support Brewer's four-hit, three strikeout effort. Morrison slammed a grand slam in the first and added a two-run double in the fourth, while Linderman went 3-for-4, including a three-run homer.
