October 14. 2014 9:29AM Pacific Power impostors at it again in Southern Oregon Fraudsters claiming to be from Pacific Power are at it again: attempting to steal money from the utility company's customers over the phone. The company reported the thieves are posing as customer service agents. They call residences and small businesses and claim to be from the electric company. Sometimes they demand payment for past-due bills. At other times, customers are told they need to put down a deposit for a special meter installation. The scammer then tells the customer they need to make a payment over the phone using a credit card, by calling a special phone number, or by purchasing a pre-paid debit card and calling back with the code. In a news release, Pacific Power said legitimate company representatives will always have the customer's account information on hand should they have to make a call. Even then, suspicious customers can hang up and call back the company's customer service number at 1-888-221-7070. The company encouraged targets of the scam to note information such as phone numbers that appear on caller ID and addresses where they are told to send money before contacting local police. http://www.mailtribune.com/article/20141014/NEWS/141019825 © 2015 Copyright © 1995-2011 Crain Communications Inc.
