Religion news: Buddhist temple offers same-sex marriage ceremonies Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 30, 2014 at 12:20 AM Posted Dec. 30, 2014 at 12:20 AM » Social News WEEK IN RELIGION Although same-sex marriages are not legally recognized in Japan, one Buddhist temple located in Kyoto has started offering symbolic ceremonies to same-sex couples. Shunkoin Temple’s deputy head priest, Rev. Takafumi Kawakami, said five same-sex couples have exchanged vows at the temple. He also noted that while the ceremonies do not afford the couples the legal rights that a traditional heterosexual marriage certificate does, he is glad the ceremonies are making LGBT issues more visible in Japan. “I am not specializing the gay wedding here,” Kawakami told the Huffington Post. “I am just accepting every couple who would like to have their wedding ceremony here regardless of their faith and sexual orientation.” SURVEY SAYS A new poll conducted by the Pew Research Center found that the majority of Americans are OK with religious holiday displays being erected on public property. Forty-four percent of respondents said it was OK for nativity scenes to be displayed on public property, while another 28 percent said it was OK as long as symbols for other faiths were also present. Meanwhile, 20 percent of respondents said they are against all religious displays on public property.
