Mostly because I couldn’t believe that it existed, but also to see what types of individuals would allow themselves to be part of such insanity. It seems that the people chosen for the show felt that being completely unencumbered by clothing would make them feel truly authentic. In other words, why have to think that your date is not really interested in anything about you other than imagining what you look like naked. Just cut to the chase. The viewers, however, are left with some mystery, since the producers applied what appears to be diaphanous Band-Aids on their private parts. The “lucky” men and women who participate in the experiment are taken to an island and each one is given three dates to go on. They disrobe in front of each other and their comments are shared with the viewer on how they feel about each others physicality. Their remarks were quite candid and bordered on a movie with an R rating. One couple embarked on their date by putting oil on each other and then sliding on some material that landed them in the water. I only had one thought watching them wriggling down the beach: “How moronic is this”? Each date was comprised of different activities, like riding jet skis, kayaking, swimming or simply sitting by the pool in big lounge chairs. They kept repeating how cool it was to feel such incredible body contact. I think your imagination should be able to kick in here. Once again, my thoughts alternated between “this is so ludicrous” and “what would make someone sign on for something so idiotic”? The obvious answer is to get on television and have their “15 minutes of fame.” It appears that there is nothing today that can be left to the imagination. The incessant parade of half-naked or totally naked people is just par for the course. I am not a prude by any means, but is this what entertainment has come to? Isn’t it really just “soft porn”? Perhaps a new twist would be to have a group of senior citizens do some naked dating. Why not? Forget the Band-Aids, let it all hang out. And hang out it will! I can just see me sitting in back of an elder gentleman on a beach with my generous bosom attached to his lower back. What a treat that would be! I recently read that reality shows are becoming passé in lieu of documentaries. I hope this is true. I really feel we’ve been saturated with stupidity. It’s time to start evolving instead of dissolving! Author, humorist, PBS star and Fortune 500 trainer Loretta LaRoche lives in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
