Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Patient Alfrey zooms to his first modified victory By DON HUNT Mail Tribune WHITE CITY — A patient Brad Alfrey waited for just the right moment to make his move at the Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night. That moment came on the next-to-last lap of the modified main event as Alfrey zipped past Dave Duste, Jr., and Jay Hinton to collect his first victory since graduating from the pro stock division four years ago. "Those two (Duste and Hinton) were racing neck-and-neck for almost the entire race and I couldn’t gain on them," Alfrey said. "But towards the end the intensity picked up between them, the track got rougher and I was able to make my move." Alfrey snuck underneath the other two drivers coming out of turn four on the next-to-last lap and bolted to the checkered flag. Advertisement Duste wound up in second place but Hinton, who led for the first 17 laps, never made it to the checkered flag. He collided with Duste just 50 feet from the finish, spun into the infield and stalled. Rounding out the top five were Chris Biggs, Scott Weldon and Monte Bischoff. "This has been a long time coming," said Alfrey, who won the 2000 pro stocks points title before moving to the modified class the following year. "The modified division is very difficult to master. The set-ups can be real quirky. If you’re off just a little, you won’t finish in the top 10, especially with the caliber of driver that’s out here." Bruce Rayburn, Jr., gave the fans a thrill in a modified heat race when he flipped on the back straightaway after plowing into a lapped car. Rayburn was leading the race and didn’t see Shane May, who was creeping along on the high side of the track with mechanical problems and heading toward the pits. "I saw him at the last second and tried to turn away, but it was too late," Rayburn said. Rayburn’s car suffered a broken radiator, broken header and a badly damaged suspension, but he returned in time to finish fourth in the B main and earn a transfer to the A main, where he took sixth. Meanwhile, Frank Word III continued his dominance in the pro stock class. The Grants Pass resident started seventh and fell into ninth place the first couple laps, but pulled in behind early leader Butch Poppa on the 18th lap and finally took the lead on the 20th circuit. The victory was Word’s third of the season in five pro stock races. "You’ve got to bide your time and work the traffic," Word said in explaining his methodical push to the front. "Butch (Poppa) was running strong, but he made one little bobble and I was able to squeeze underneath him." Dave Everson also pulled past Poppa on the 23rd lap to grab second place. Poppa wound up third, with Jim Hill fourth and Jared Morrill fifth. Dan Van Acker and Gary Fitzsimmons waged a spirited duel in the dwarf car main event. As Fitzsimmons took the inside groove coming around turn four of the 12th lap, he smashed into one of the big containment tires along the inside of the track. Fitzsimmons’ mishap kept Van Acker in the lead and he went on to take the checkered flag. Dave Bishop won the mini stock feature.
