Ashland event held for man accused of shooting policeman ASHLAND -- An event to build support for a former journalist imprisoned in Pennsylvania on murder charges is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way. Mumia Abu-Jamal was imprisoned in the State Correctional Institute in Huntington, Pa., in 1981, accused of shooting police officer Daniel Faulkner. His case has since drawn national attention and prompted debate about race, press freedom and death penalty issues. Abu-Jamal was a radio commentator, writer and founding member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Panthers. The Ashland event will feature Gerald Cavanaugh, history professor emeritus, University of California at Berkeley; Noelle Hanrahan, of the Prison Radio Project; Dick Becker, reporter for Worker's World; and state Rep. Joann Bowman, a Democrat who represents District 19 in Portland. Participants can ask questions, view tapes and hear readings of Mumia's work. Plans will also be discussed to send representatives to the "Millions for Mumia" march set for April 24 in San Francisco. The national Committee to Save Mumia Abu-Jamal includes actors Ossie Davis, Mike Farrell, Ed Asner and Harry Belafonte. Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, Oregon USA
