"Basically, council passed a resolution declaring that the public interest is furthered by city property known as the old fire hall being sold," said City Administrator Phil Messina. The firehouse is currently being used by the Central Point School District and Central Point Parks and Recreation for programs. Messina said the building was being considered by a local business person for use as offices upstairs and a wholesale outlet downstairs. But he could not disclose who the buyer might be or the nature of his business. Messina said the council will ensure that any changes made to the building will further the city’s goals of revitalizing the downtown and attracting more businesses. Funds from sale of the firehouse will be used to establish a community center. The firehouse was made available in 1996 when the city contracted with Fire District 3 for fire protection. Messina said the city had received no official offers on the property. He expected the building to continue to be available for use by various groups until it’s sold.
