Employees at the Medford credit union, 1370 Center Drive, discovered the first device just before noon Friday, June 19, Medford police reported. In a news release on Monday, investigators called the device "sophisticated," saying that it blended in well on the ATM and was difficult to detect. Police do not believe customers who used the ATM after the device was installed had their personal information compromised, as the device, now seized as evidence, does not appear to transmit a signal. "The suspects would have had to remove the device to obtain the data," the release says. Suspects were caught on video installing the Medford device at 6:38 a.m. June 19. The device consisted of a card reader — placed over the card slot — and a camera mounted on the machine intended to capture user PIN data. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said a similar device was found at a credit union in Central Point on Saturday, June 20. "There are other types of skimming devices out there, and folks should pay attention to anything on the ATM that looks different or out of place," the release says. "This activity is not isolated to Rogue Credit Union and is happening more frequently across all financial institutions nationwide. These recent examples are part of a growing national trend." Rogue Credit Union President and CEO Gene Pelham said the institution's drive-up ATMs have been hit by this type of fraud several times in the past month. Credit union members reported unauthorized withdrawals from their accounts in early June and an investigation determined criminals had placed a skimmer at one of the credit union's drive-up ATMs in Central Point for about 14 hours on May 28, Pelham said. Thirty accounts were targeted and about $40,000 was taken, he said. A skimmer placed on a Central Point ATM June 19 hit 28 accounts and resulted in the loss of $11,000. Central Willamette Community Credit Union in Albany was targeted May 29, and Pelham said he has been in touch with executives there because the case is so similar to the one that week in Central Point. Pelham said the credit union reimburses members for any losses as soon as they are discovered. Compromised cards are canceled and replaced quickly. "This type of fraud was common in larger communities, but we thought it was an anomaly here," he said. The credit union is adopting new protocols to check outdoor ATMs more frequently. "We want members to know we are watching our ATMs and we respond quickly to any complaints or concerns," Pelham said. He reiterated that anyone who sees something that doesn't look right on an ATM should come inside the branch to notify officials during regular hours or contact police immediately anytime.
