And looks like he is on his way to becoming greatest NFL coach of all-time. He’s got the four Super Bowl rings to prove it now, after New England’s thrilling comeback victory against Seattle in the Super Bowl on Sunday night. He’s put the “D” in dynasty in the complicated universe of salary-cap football. All Hail the Hoodie, as I wrote in the lead-up to the game. Resistance is futile. The Good Guys in the White Hat don’t always win. In this case, it’s the guy in the hoodie who has the personality of dry toast in dealing with most people, and has, shall we say, a “complicated” history of sportsmanship, gamesmanship and not playing by the rules. Do the math: Belichick has the most postseason victories in NFL history, the fourth-most regular-season victories and just tied Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers as the only coach with four Super Bowl rings. Don Shula is the only other coach in NFL history who has taken his teams to six Super Bowls. Belichick also went three other times as a defensive coordinator. Florida’s beloved “Shoes” is the guy who also used the infamous “Beli-cheat” reference recently. He still remembers how Belichick’s Patriots made a run at the Miami Dolphins run of perfection during the 2007 season, etched in the controversy of “Spygate.” Unfortunately, Shula would have to take a number to get in line with the Belichick bashers. The controversy over the deflated balls allegedly used by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts further fuels the legend of the man under the hoodie. Belichick has been known to channel his dark side before, with shenanigans like Spygate in 2007. Envy, hatred, call it what you want to — it’s all part of the Belichick MO. He’s the guy everybody loves to hate, but is hard to beat. John Harbaugh, coach of the Baltimore Ravens, found that out just before Pete Carroll did in the Super Bowl. “He’s been a great mentor, a great friend. I have the utmost respect for him,” Harbaugh said before the Super Bowl. “Bill Belichick is the greatest coach of our generation, without question. I don’t think anybody would doubt that. Nothing is going to change that.” Looks like I got at least one “amen.” Do you Hail the Hoodie as well?
