High school events go on largely as scheduled By DON HUNT The terrorist attacks on the East Coast didn't stop high school athletes from taking the playing fields across the Rogue Valley Tuesday. School administrators decided to play the games as scheduled. An exception was in Klamath Falls, where all games involving Klamath Union and Mazama high schools were called off. The North Medford High soccer teams also had their matches canceled when Redmond declined to participate. "We didn't see any reason why we should call off our events," Medford School District Superintendent Steve Wisely said. "Our schools were safe, our playing fields were safe and our kids were highly supervised. "Our youngsters look forward to these activities, and they're hard to make up. We saw no reason they should be canceled." Wisely said the terrorist attacks and ensuing events were shown on TV screens in social studies classrooms throughout the day at North and South high schools. "The students were made aware of the situation, but I don't think it was necessary to dwell on this for an entire day," Wisely said. "And I'm sure there were discussions on this subject around a lot of dinner tables." Tonie Kellom, athletic director at Klamath Union, said her school district wanted to unite students with their families early in the day. "In light of everything that went on, the parents were uneasy and the students were confused," she said. "Our district office thought it was best to call things off." South Medford Athletic Director Dennis Murphy admitted a couple of his coaches weren't very excited about playing their games but adhered to the Medford district policy.
