Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 24, 2005 $5 bill remade into $100 leads to jail By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A California man was jailed Thursday after he tried to use counterfeit $100 bills at a gas station on the 2200 block of Biddle Road, police reported. Ernesto Samuel Esquivel, 21, of Vallejo, Calif. was arrested by Medford police officers on four counts of first-degree forgery and three counts of second-degree theft, police said. The Chevron’s attendant wrote down Esquivel’s license plate and called police after she noticed the $100 bill he gave her looked suspicious. Holding the bill up to the light revealed a "watermark" image of Abraham Lincoln — it was actually a $5 bill that had been washed and reprinted to look like a $100 bill, police said. Police quickly found Esquivel and arrested him. During the subsequent investigation, police discovered that he had passed five counterfeit bills in the Medford area. Police are asking local businesses to check all $100 bills received recently. Counterfeit $100 bills from this case will show a watermark of Abraham Lincoln in the right corner when held up to a light source. Using a counterfeit-detecting marker will not work on these bills because the paper is authentic. Advertisement Esquivel was lodged Thursday in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained late Saturday on $10,000 bail. Medford police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Brent Mark at 541-774-2270. Thursday’s arrest came just one day after Medford police arrested four Bay Area visitors on charges of a counterfeit scam at local banks, in addition to drug possession charges. Police believe the scam involved the suspects tearing two $100 bills and using the parts to make what appeared to be the remains of three $100 bills.
