I've always heard the rule is to leave one car length per 10 mph, but obviously most people don't do that. What does the law say — it seems like it would be quite the mathematical equation for a cop to figure the length of the car, the speed and the distance between it, and the car in front of it. So what would get you a ticket? — Rob, Medford Basically, Rob, the answer is: A lack of common sense could get you a ticket. While there is no exact distance required between cars based on their length or speed. It's addressed in Oregon statutes — ORS 811.485, to be exact. That statute says a driver commits the offense of following too closely if he or she: Follows another vehicle "more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of the vehicles and the traffic upon, and condition of, the highway." Follows another vehicle so closely that there is not "sufficient space between vehicles to enable a vehicle to enter and occupy the space without danger." The offense of following too closely is a Class B traffic violation. Good to know, Rob, that the rules do not apply to funeral processions.
