Grizzly girls secure trip to state ASHLAND � The Ashland girls water polo team earned a berth to the state tournament with a win over Tualatin on Monday at the Southern Oregon University pool. The Grizzlies came out on top, 9-4, behind a huge effort from goalie Liz Alrick. Co-captain Alrick kept the Timberwolves at bay with 12 saves and scored the final goal of the game with only five seconds remaining. Ashland, which finished second in the Southern Oregon Conference after an 8-7 loss to Sheldon on Friday, advances to face David Douglas at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Osborne Aquatic Center in Corvallis. Junior Elisa Jessop led the Grizzlies� offensive attack with three goals and three steals while seniors Vanessa Walker and Keara Duggan each added two scores apiece. Senior Alyssa Simonsen chipped in with a goal and led the stingy defense with six steals. The third-ranked SOC champion Ashland boys team takes on Beaverton at 12:10 p.m. Friday in the state tournament. The boys earned their berth after taking the SOC finale with a 10-5 victory over Sprague on Friday. Both the girls and boys team were also well represented on the all-conference teams. Simonsen and Vanessa Walker were both voted to the first team while Alrick achieved second-team honors. Brad Scoles took home first-team and MVP accolades, while teammate Evan Mather was the other first-teamer.
