CRIME UPDATED: Police hunt for attempted kidnapping suspect in White City Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 28, 2015 at 10:15 AM Updated Jan 28, 2015 at 4:29 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 28, 2015 at 10:15 AM Updated Jan 28, 2015 at 4:29 PM » Social News WHITE CITY — The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is hunting for a man who allegedly tried to kidnap a young boy Wednesday morning, then fled when the child was able to break away and run off. The attempted kidnapping was reported at 7:30 a.m. in the 3600 block of Avenue G in White City. The 12-year-old boy had walked a family member to the school-bus stop and was returning home when the man walked up to him. The child was about 200 yards from his home at the time, investigators said. Capt. Monte Holloway of the sheriff's department said the man grabbed the boy, but the child was able to shrug off the advance and run back to his home. The child was not injured during the incident. "It was a quick response," Holloway said of police flocking to the area after the 911 call. "They quickly buttoned up the area." Holloway added that the rapid response was "text book." Police spent the immediate hours after the report canvassing the surrounding neighborhoods and searching for the suspect door to door. They were still on scene Wednesday afternoon. Police said the man was not known to the victim, and the kidnapping attempt does not appear to have been planned. The man was described as Hispanic, in his mid-30s to mid-40s, and about 5-feet-10 to 5-feet-11. He was last seen wearing a bright-orange, long-sleeved shirt, a San Francisco 49ers ball cap and black jeans, police said. He may have a scar under his right eye. Holloway said it's important for children walking to school or elsewhere to constantly be aware of their surroundings in case an incident like this occurs. "You can't predict when and if these are going to happen," he said. "Children need to be taught that it's fight or flight. If you can yell for help, if you can fight and break away, to do that.” Anyone with information about the man should contact the sheriff's department at 541-774-6800 or 911.
