SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: Urban drone use is unchartered territory, police say Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Concerning the use of drones in the neighborhood — our neighbor is using his new drone to check out his other neighbors' yards, either by hovering the drone over their yard or by flying high enough to see a number of yards. The drone followed my wife around the yard as she worked in the gardens. Can you enlighten us as to the laws and regulations concerning our rights as neighbors and his right to fly his drone? — David B., Medford Well, David, according to the Medford Police Department, what your neighbor is doing is, at least for the moment, legal. Lt. Mike Budreau said the use of camera-equipped drones is "unchartered waters" for law enforcement. "There are no current laws that would be applicable," he said. "I think it's something that's emerging and is going to be an issue." Budreau said he's not aware of any increase in calls for service related to drones. The one area where drone operators could run afoul of local authorities, he said, is if they recklessly endanger another person — a motorist, for example — using the drone.
