Salmon derby will help amputee ... PREP VOLLEYBALL Challengers top OES, advance to state Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 31, 2015 at 8:59 PM Updated Oct 31, 2015 at 11:14 PM Posted Oct. 31, 2015 at 8:59 PM Updated Oct 31, 2015 at 11:14 PM » Social News Claire Hawkins came up clutch for Cascade Christian in a Class 3A volleyball first-round state playoff victory on the Challengers’ home court Saturday. Cascade Christian struggled early on serve-receive but turned it around to register a straight set 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 victory over Oregon Episcopal. "The kids buckled down and made some things happen to get into a flow offensively," said Cascade Christian coach Rob Kleker. "Once that happened we shut them down. We attacked them with the serve." The victory puts the seventh-seeded Challengers (23-2) into the state tournament for the second straight year and four out of the last five. In 2014, Cascade finished third at state. Cascade Christian opens the eight-team tournament against Vale at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Forest Grove High. Hawkins, a junior outside hitter, tied for the team lead in kills at eight with Ellie Brown. But Hawkins' slams seemed to come at key times. "When we needed a kill, (Hawkins) is the kid we went to," said Kleker. Freshman defensive specialist Aubrey Kievit excelled with 18 digs. "She had a really key dig late in the third set," said Kleker. "She was able to pop the ball up and we got a kill that was a momentum shifter." The Challengers received six kills and five aces from Allison Winter and senior setter Alyssa Brown distributed 22 assists. VALE 3, ST. MARY’S 0: At Vale, the second-seeded Eastern Oregon League champion’s power hitting and tough serving proved too much for St. Mary’s in the Class 3A first-round playoff volleyball loss, 25-10, 25-8, 25-13. Madi Christensen pace the Crusaders (13-14) offensively with six kills, followed by Sarah Thisted and Katie Rietmann with two each. Ashley Rietmann dished out eight assists and went 6-for-7 serving. Mackenzie Addington provided eight digs and Emily Johnson served the Crusaders’ lone ace against Vale. ASHLAND 3, SANDY 1: At Ashland, Ellie Case racked up 19 kills and five aces for Ashland, which dropped the opening set but rebounded for a 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 victory in the Class 5A state playoff home game. The Grizzlies (22-7) advance to the state tournament and will open against second-seeded Lebanon at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Liberty High in Hillsboro. Karlie Richardson accumulated 35 assists, five kills and four aces and Myla Norvell had 36 digs, five aces and three kills for the Grizzlies, who got 11 kills and three aces from Olivia Rooney.
