Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 7, 2005 LOCAL REPORT Brooks wins two titles at state wrestling competition OREGON CITY — Crater High’s Collin Brooks won two titles at the state high school freestyle and Greco-Roman championships last weekend. Brooks, wrestling at 189 pounds, claimed victories in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman title matches. Brooks also won the Class 4A state title, making him one of four triple crown champions. Crater’s Cody Clark triumphed at 215 in freestyle and placed second in Greco Roman, while teammate Charlie Alexander finished second at 275 and Jake Vizzini fourth at 130 in freestyle. At 112, South Medford’s Juan Aguilar took third and Cody Knudsen finished fourth in the freestyle class. For Eagle Point, Jake McCoy snagged two third-place finishes at 152 and Randy Pershall (135) placed third in freestyle and fifth in Greco Roman. Churchill’s Bryson Gutches, a former Crater competitor, was named the most outstanding wrestler in Greco Roman. Advertisement The top two finishers in each class qualified for the Oregon Junior National team. Panthers place five teams on academic all-star list South Medford High had five teams place in the Class 4A top 10 of the OSAA/Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State winter sports teams. The Panther boys swim team placed second with a 3.77 GPA. South Eugene was first with a 3.85. South’s boys basketball team was third (3.59), the girls swim team finished fifth (3.72), girls basketball tied for seventh (3.74) and the Panther wrestling squad finished tied for eighth (3.23). Crater also fared well, with the girls basketball team taking second with a 3.85, and the wrestling squad tied for eighth (3.23). The Ashland boys basketball team tied for sixth with a 3.51, while North Medford was fourth (3.77) in girls swimming. At the Class 3A/2A/1A level, Phoenix finished fifth (3.35) in boys swimming and tied for 10th in girls swimming with a 3.54. Rogue River tied for eighth in girls basketball (3.69) and North Valley was 10th in wrestling (3.08). Cascade Christian snagged 10th place with a 3.23 in cheerleading. Teams that earn a 3.0 GPA or higher will receive 25 points for their school in The Oregonian Cup standings. Soccer clinic for area coaches set this weekend Ashland Soccer Club is hosting an F license coaching clinic Friday through Sunday at the Ashland Middle School. Registration and a classroom session will be held Friday from 6-9 p.m. in the Ashland Middle School library. Saturday and Sunday’s sessions will be on the Ashland Middle School’s upper field from 3-6 p.m. Bring cleats and water to the field sessions. The clinic is free of charge to all area coaches, assistant coaches and interested parents. It features Dave Potter, OYSA instructor, and covers coaching psychology, practice structure and coaching activities. For more information, call Myron Hudson at 482-6235. Hockey tournament slated this weekend at The RRRink The men’s Pear Blossom Hockey Tournament will be held this weekend at The RRRink. Six of the top teams in the state are participating in the event, which will run Friday through Sunday. There will be three games Friday starting at 7:15 p.m., and six games Saturday beginning at noon. Three more games, including the 5 p.m. championship match, will be held Sunday starting at 8 a.m. Admission is free. For more information, call The RRRink at 770-1177.
