Scharer tossed TD passes to five different receivers as the Wildcats led for most of three quarters. But SOU (2-4) used a second-half surge to pull within 30-22 on a 73-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard TD plunge by Shane Van Zant. Linfield answered with less than four minutes to play on a 50-yard scoring strike from Scharer to John Torsey. The Raiders came back with a 16-yard TD pass from Casey Mitchell to Tim Greenidge with 1:58 to go, but Linfield recovered the subsequent onside kick and ran out the clock. Van Zant led the Raiders on the ground with 86 yards on 20 carries, while Mitchell completed 17 of 28 for 244 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Kevin Holtzman hauled in five Mitchell passes for 87 yards. Linfield took a 14-7 lead into the half before SOU crept back with a 2-yard run TD run by Mitchell. The extra point by Steve Palmer failed, however, leaving the Wildcats clinging to a 14-13 advantage. Palmer rebounded with a 45-yard field goal to pull SOU within 21-16, but a safety and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Scharer to Josh Vierra pushed the Linfield back to 30-16 with 9:21 left in the third quarter.
