Phoenix opens Skyline play on triumphant note TALENT - Phoenix players put in extra time in the batter's box over spring break and it paid off when the Pirates swept its opening Skyline Conference doubleheader from Mazama Saturday. Phoenix collected 22 hits in posting 4-3 and 10-0 victories, raising its overall record to 3-4. The Pirates had lost their first three games by one run and, often playing in chilly, inclement weather, the offense wasn't heating up. "We worked extra hard on hitting this week," said Phoenix coach Bill Shearin. "We had three-hour practices with two hours of hitting. The girls really put in some time and hitting is what paid off for us. We hit throughout the order." In fact, 10 different Pirates went to the plate in Game 2, and all 10 collected at least one hit. Tiffany Ross, the winning pitcher in both games, was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, as was Kelly Singleton. In that game, Phoenix scored six runs in the second inning, getting singles from Kelsey Russell, Jamie Escobar and Kendra Kohler for one run. Singleton plated two with another single, then after Shannon Reed reached on an error and stole second, Amanda Moore belted a two-run triple. Ross followed with a double to end the scoring. Ross hurled a two-hitter at the Vikings, fanning five and walking none. In the first game, the Pirates scored the game-winner in the sixth when Moore laced a bases-loaded single to score Kohler, who had also singled. Kohler, Escobar, Ross and Dunlap all had two hits. Ross gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked none. ROGUE RIVER 8-8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1-2 - At Cave Junction, Rogue River took advantage of 13 errors by Illinois Valley to earn a doubleheader sweep. Rogue River scored five runs on four hits and three IV errors in the sixth inning to pull away in Game 1. Kristi Frederick led the Chieftains' charge with four hits overall - including three triples - and five RBIs in Game 2. Maudi Biggs chipped in with two hits in the opener and Jill Artoff had two in Game 2. Tiphanie Pope went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple in the opener for Illinois Valley (3-4, 0-2 Skyline), while teammate Kim Hamilton had two hits in the nightcap. Henley had nine hits and took advantage of 12 errors by Hidden Valley in the nightcap. In Game 1, Tara Ironside gave up five hits in a complete-game performance for North Valley, which won despite posting just one hit. Danielle Locke belted a two-run double in the sixth to bring the Knights to within 4-3. Lakeview answered with a run in the seventh en route to the victory. Hannah Murray stole two bases in Game 2 for North Valley (2-4, 1-1 Skyline), which committed five errors that led to four of Lakeview's runs. Bittle allowed four hits and struck out eight with one walk in improving to 4-0, while Cristofaro allowed only three hits in Game 2. Allesha Spradling went 4-for-7 in the twin bill for Crater, while teammates Tyler Sutherland and Rachel Baker each had two hits in the nightcap. In Game 1, Beugli went the distance, striking out seven and walking one. The Grizzlies scored their runs in the sixth inning when Sara Burnson singled home Angela Heine, who was hit by a pitch, and Kat Clason, who had singled. In the second game, Jeska and Beugli combined on a four-hitter. Jeska got the win, fanning four with no walks over five innings. Ashland scored in four different innings. It took a 3-0 lead in the third on Stephanie Hargis' two-out, two-run single in the third. Burnson was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
