Mustangs pound The Dalles THE DALLES � The Medford Mustangs went to wooden bats Monday without any drop in productivity. The Mustangs pounded out 14 hits and came away with a 17-7 American Legion victory over The Dalles. Medford assistant coach Sandee Kensinger said The Dalles requested wooden bats be used in the game. And it proved to be to the Mustangs� liking. Tony Conklin registered his fifth victory in eight decisions with a 10-strikeout performance. Conklin tired in the eighth and Travis Dunlap came in to close out the victory. Conklin got the offense in gear with a three-run homer in the third that gave Medford a 5-0 lead. Conklin finished with two hits and five RBIs. The Mustangs put the game away with six runs in the seventh inning and five more in the eighth. Medford sent 10 batters to the plate in each inning. Phil Ouellette added two hits, four RBIs and three runs for the Mustangs, while Dunlap knocked in four runs. Shawn Backstrom and Evan McArthur each had two hits. The Mustangs (19-13), 4-0 on this road trip, play a 1 p.m. doubleheader today at Hermiston. David Sills provided a second-game highlight for the Comets with a second-inning bases-loaded triple. Colin Schoonover got thrown out trying to score from first on the hit. MEDFORD NATIONAL STAYS ALIVE � Medford National Gold staved off elimination with two victories Monday at the District 8 boys 9-10 year-old Little League tournament at Rogue River. Isaac Rolie contributed three hits, three RBIs and pitched three scoreless innings in a 6-4 win over Roseburg. Jared Hess added two doubles and two RBIs as the Nationals knocked Roseburg out of the nine-team tournament. Medford (5-1) moves into the championship round today against undefeated Grants Pass at 6 p.m. at Rogue River High. Medford needs to beat Grants Pass twice in the double-elimination tournament to advance to state. If Medford wins, the second game would be at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Earlier Monday, Medford defeated Grants Pass Blue 21-14 in seven innings in a game that was continued from Sunday. Medford�s Patrick Thibeault went 4-for-5 with three runs and Maxwell Britton provided three hits and four RBIs. Softball REBELS CLAIM STATE � The Rogue Valley Rebels went undefeated in capturing the 12-under ASA state softball championship at a 26-team double-elimination tournament last weekend at Sunset Park in Beaverton. The Rebels (34-5), made up of players from the South Medford, North Medford and Crater high school districts, receive an automatic bid to nationals. The national tournament starts Aug. 6 in Mount Vernon, Wash. Brittany Warr contributed clutch hitting as Rogue Valley came from behind to defeat the Sherwood Fireballs, 4-2, in the championship game Sunday. Warr provided a RBI single in the sixth inning that tied the game at 2-all. She then doubled in the go-ahead run. Rebels� winning pitcher Jill Jeter allowed one earned run and struck out four. Earlier Sunday, the Rebels had to rally for an 8-7 victory in nine innings against Sherwood to advance into the championship game. The Fireballs came back through the loser�s bracket to force a rematch. The Rebels trailed Sherwood 5-2 with two outs in the seventh inning before singles by Tiffany Schmelzer and Brooke Newsome. Simone Hubbard�s RBI single and Jeter�s RBI doubled helped the Rebels tie the game. Jeter picked up the win with a seven-strikeout, no-walk pitching effort. On Saturday, Rogue Valley defeated the West Linn Xtreme 19-7, the Sandy Rage 12-3 and the Tualatin Wolves 5-1. The Rebels will be holding fund-raisers to offset the costs to go to the national tournament. Tax deductible donations can be made to the Rogue Valley Rebels at any U.S. Bank. BLUE ACES WIN � At Waldport, Darci Byrne pitched a two-hit shutout and Alex Jordahls provided the winning hit as the South Medford Blue Aces defeated the North Medford Black Tornado 2-0 in the championship game of the Commotion at the Ocean 16-under fastpitch softball tournament Saturday and Sunday. Jordahls� two-run double in the third inning scored the game�s only runs. Byrne registered four strikeouts. Earlier Sunday, the Blue Aces defeated the Amity Angels 3-2, then Jennifer Mendenhall pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as South Medford downed North Bend 4-1 to advance to the title game. The Blue Aces posted a pair of wins Saturday, 5-1 over Waldport and 4-1 against North Bend. South Medford went 5-0 in the tournament and was seeded No. 1 for the championship round.
