Mail Tribune 100: June 28, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 28, 1916 PARENTS BUREAU STARTS WORK FOR CHILD WELFARE The Parent's Educational Bureau of Southern Oregon opened its headquarters in the public library Tuesday with a large number of mothers in attendance. Mrs. E. R. Seely occupied the chair, opening the program with a short address explaining the object of this work: To give to parents help in caring for infants, in rearing their children and to establish in this section of Oregon a child welfare station, such as are conducted in many of the cities and towns of the country. Mrs. Seely's talk was followed by a reading, beautifully conducted by Mrs. Hovius. Professor Henri Deschamps followed with a most helpful address, full of suggestions to mothers as to the best ways to meet the problems presented by boys and girls reaching the period of adolescence. Following this address a discussion of the Junior Thrift movement was taken up. All there seemed agreed that this, put into effect in Medford, would help greatly in filling the vacation period with useful occupation for the little ones and young boys and girls. They bespeak the interest and cooperation of all the parents in the city making their exhibit to be given in the fall a great success. Mrs. Bullis then gave an informal talk, describing the work of a child welfare station, in which she is interested in New York. The child welfare room is in the basement of the public library and will be open on Saturday afternoon. A conference will be held at that time, concerning plans for the future of the bureau. All persons interested in this work or wishing to meet those engaged in it, will be cordially welcome next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ALONG ROGUE RIVER The school meetings passed off quietly. In the Long Branch district Mrs. Mabel Sager was elected clerk and Jack Houston director; in Reese Creek district Fred Pettigrew clerk, and Mr. Robinson, director; in Debenger Gap, Jasper Hannah was elected director and Mrs. Marie Foster, clerk.
