Wilson, Gallegos of Bulldogs advance to semifinals MARQUETTE, Mich . -- Medford's Bulldog Boxing Club advanced two fighters into the semifinals of the National Junior Olympic Boxing Championships Wednesday at Northern Michigan University. Mike Wilson and Ricky Gallegos registered impressive victories in the quarterfinals and are guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the tournament for 15-16-year-old boxers. Wilson, who was runner-up last year in the 201-plus pound division, registered a unanimous 5-0 super heavyweight decision over Matthew Burney of Dayton, Ohio. The victory improves Wilson's record to 20-3. The Medford 6-foot-2, 230-pound boxer landed a double right hand to Burney's head in the second round and was awarded a standing eight count. "He's clearly the best heavyweight here," Bulldog trainer Jim Pedrojetti said. "It's Mike's championship to lose. Mike beat the biggest guy in the tournament at 6-6, 270 pounds." The No. 2-ranked Wilson faces Mafi Williams of East Orange, N.J., in today's semifinals. Gallegos looked equally impressive with a 5-0 victory over Francis Langley of Washington, D.C., in the 132-pound division. Gallegos was awarded two standing eight counts against Langley. "Ricky is just stronger than these guys and he's a better boxer too," said Pedrojetti. "He doubled his hooks and used some straight right hands behind his hooks."
