Jackson County Circuit  Judge Lorenzo Meija sentenced Wayne Eugene Pearson, 29, to a total of 67 months in prison after Pearson pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree assault, attempting to elude a police officer, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons. According to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office, police opened fire March 6 on a stolen white Dodge pickup driven by Pearson after he rammed an ATF Jeep Cherokee and tried to run down Medford police officers Jason Wileman and Randy Jewell, who were attempting to set up a spike strip to stop the truck near the intersection of Hilton Road and Northcrest Circle, a cul-de-sac near Poplar Avenue. Special Agent Kenny Cooper of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Oregon Department of Justice investigator Mike Wells had pursued the pickup from the Motel 6 on Biddle Road after recognizing it from an "attempt to locate" bulletin. Pearson and his passenger, 32-year-old Shavon Ruth Willard, had been on the run from authorities in Idaho since February, when they allegedly stole a truck and rammed a sheriff's deputy's patrol vehicle. Pearson was grazed in the head, while Willard was hit twice in the chest and once each in the arm, leg and right eye. A grand jury investigation later cleared all four officers involved, ruling the shooting justified. Willard was sentenced to 18 months' probation after pleading guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and sent back to Idaho to stand trial. She's currently serving a five-year sentence there after pleading guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance. Reach Thomas Moriarty at [email protected] .
