Police caught the suspect near the store, and he was arraigned on Wednesday. As it turned out, the suspect is a convicted sex offender. Jessica Schifano of the rue21 clothes store at the Grants Pass Shopping Center said Wednesday that a man asked to use a dressing room and then afterward asked about the sales racks. The store was full of customers, she said. Another customer then asked to use a dressing room. Schifano checked it for clothing and noticed a "SHOPLIFTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED" sign. "I know that we don't have those signs," she said. She thought maybe it was a prank. She confirmed with another employee that they had not added signs. The sign had been attached to the wall using a drill. She said a customer helped her to examine the sign and discovered an area where it concealed a camera. Taking apart the sign, she discovered the camera inside. "It was recording," she said. Meanwhile, the man was still in the store, but he took off once he realized what was going on, Schifano said. "It was shocking for everybody," she said. She called 911 and gave a description of the man. Police arrested Curtis Eugene Fleming, 42, no permanent address, at Taser-point in the shopping center. He was taken to jail on a charge of attempting to commit a crime: invasion of personal privacy. Schifano's attention and quick action appear to have prevented any customers from being recorded on the tablet computer. She said she could see on the video that no victims were recorded. "We never put anyone else in the room," she said. "At the end (of the recording), you can see me looking at it." In addition to the new local charge, Fleming was being held in the Josephine County Jail without bail on a charge of failure to report as sex offender related to a 2014 case out of Medford. According to court records, Fleming's probation was revoked last summer in that case, which related to an arrest on Feb. 17, 2014 following a report of a man looking in house windows in Medford. He had been staying at the Medford Gospel Mission but checked out on Jan. 27, 2014, without reporting to authorities. In April 2014, Medford police issued a warning about Fleming. Police were concerned about his intentions, given his history and his then practice of approaching shoppers with a Bible and a friendly smile, trying to shake hands. He had been convicted of second-degree kidnapping and harassment in 2003 when he persuaded two 13-year-old girls to play a game that involved switching clothing and then grabbed one and tried to drag her into nearby bushes on West Eighth Street in Medford. In that case, he was sentenced to 70 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender. Before that, he was sentenced to probation in 1998 after misdemeanor sex-abuse charges were dropped in a case where he was alleged to have groped women while giving good-luck hugs after selling them magazines. In 2000, he was indicted on two counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct and attempting to commit a Class A felony, but the charges of child pornography were dropped in a plea deal. He was sentenced to more than three years in prison for the remaining charges. Fleming has multiple aliases, including Curtis Eugene Gleming, Curtis Eugene Kincannon and Jack Mackinnis. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31.
