Pirates fall short despite Darby's top-notch effort PHOENIX - The Phoenix High volleyball team found it was tough to start an offense with a struggling service return on Tuesday. The Pirates also missed on 10 serving opportunities during a 11-15, 15-11, 9-15 loss to North Valley. "We just didn't handle service return very well," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy. "It's a weakness that we have, but we also didn't serve well. When you're missing 10 serves in a night in games that are this close, you become your own worst enemy." April Darby had a good night for the Pirates with 14 kills and a 16-of-17 serving effort to go along with four aces. But Phoenix (4-3, 1-2 Skyline) couldn't handle North Valley's Elaina Renius and Whitney Coston. Renius led the way with 21 kills and three blocks, while Coston added 18 kills. Nicole Roberts led the Knights (4-3, 2-1) with 21 digs and setter Carly Burns had 34 assists. "They had a very high percentage (serving)," said Murphy. "They kept us out of our offense most of the night and just served better than we serve received." HENLEY 15-15, ROGUE RIVER 6-6 - At Rogue River, Katie Glasscock had four kills, five aces and eight digs in a losing effort. Melissa Day led Rogue River (2-1 Skyline) with eight digs and Madi Biggs added five, but the Chieftains committed 29 blocking errors. ILLINOIS VALLEY 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 10-11 - At Murphy, Tannis Kearney led Hidden Valley with four kills and two serving aces but it wasn't enough during a Skyline Conference loss. The Mustangs committed nine service errors that led to their third conference loss in as many games. SCL CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, GLENDALE 9-13 - At Central Point, the Challengers improved to 6-0 behind 20 assists from senior setter Whitney Brookins. Senior middle Kristen Falamone contributed five kills and senior right side Amy Roseberg had four digs. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 15-15, PROSPECT 11-5 - At Prospect, Butte falls pounded the court for 11 aces and Kathi St. George had five kills as the Loggers beat Prospect in the Skyline A League opener for both teams. Asia Million was on the service line for eight points in Game 1 and Jessica Dunlap did likewise in Game 2 for the Loggers. Million finished with four aces.
