At 1 a.m. Monday, the Oregon Department of Forestry will implement tighter restrictions of activities that have historically caused wildfires. Chain saw use, non-industrial use of power driven machinery and non-agricultural mowing of dry grasses will be banned from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The use of fireworks will be prohibited, except in areas cleared from all flammable vegetation. However, the use of fireworks is prohibited all year on Bureau of Land Management lands protected by the ODF and on National Forest lands. Burning of debris is forbidden, as well as smoking in areas of flammable vegetation. Campfires are not allowed except in improved campgrounds and the use of off-road vehicles is prohibited. Cutting, grinding and welding of metal in areas of flammable vegetation also will have to wait until a cooler season. For the Wild and Scenic Section of the Rogue River to remain scenic, ODF also is increasing fire restrictions from Grave Creek to Marial. Those who enjoy the river will not be permitted to have open campfires. All cooking must be done on gas or propane stoves or in a raised firepan with charcoal briquettes. Smoking is only allowed on the river and on the sand and gravel bars between the river and the high water mark. Each group also must have a shovel and bucket with them as an extra precaution. Also beginning Monday, the industrial fire precaution level will change to Level 2, for commercial and industrial forest operators.
