The burglary and vandalism were reported to Oregon State Police troopers early Monday, said John Vial, ODOT district manager. Vial said it appears vandals broke into the station in the 100 block of Mill Creek Road late Friday or early Saturday. They broke a window and several locks and took hand tools, chainsaws, hand-held radios, 100 gallons of gasoline, $100 in petty cash and boots, jackets, clothing and other personal gear from employee lockers. It is the second break-in at an ODOT facility in two months. Shawn Stephens, ODOT assistant district manager, said burglars broke into a maintenance shop at Lemolo Lake (near Diamond Lake) about two months ago and stole equipment valued at about $7,000. "We've been hit pretty good," he said. In 2003 a light fixture shorted out in the Prospect station, igniting a fire that resulted in an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 in damage. No injuries were reported, but crews temporarily had to travel to Lemolo Lake, more than 50 miles away in Douglas County, to refuel snowplows, blowers and graders.
